OXON XC CHAMPS, HORSPATH, 7th JANUARY 07
The U17 White Horse boys were the heroes of the day, from a club perspective.
TIM TRAINOR romped to a clear victory, backed up by ROB BOWLES in 3rd, and
with HENRY PENFOLD 8th and JOSEPH McCROHON 13th, it was Team Gold too.
Well done lads!
Other performances of note were FRANCES BRISCOE'S victory in the Senior Ladies,
OWAIN BRISTOW 4th in Senior Men (16 seconds away from Bronze), and ALICE LORD
5th in the U17 Ladies. But really anyone who ran on the day needs congratulating,
with all this rain and mud around at the moment.

YOUNG ATHLETES CROSS COUNTRY RACES. WANTAGE DECEMBER 16 2006
The inaugural event was a success with the competitors split into two age categories and the entrants for the races are pictured below. The results will appear in the next newletter (and under 'Latest News'). Many thanks to all those who helped organise the event and we look forward to the next one - provionally on Saturday 10th February.

OXFORD LEAGUE 1, 5th NOVEMBER 06
Best individual results were achieved by ROB BOWLES, a close-up 2nd
in the U17s, FRANCES BRISCOE 2nd in the Senior Women, and STEVE
McGUIGAN 6th in the Senior Men.
Elsewhere it was very gratifying to have five finishers in the U15/13 Girls
race....so well done to JODIE O'DONNELL, OLIVIA LORD, ELLIE DYKES,
ERIN BRADLEY and DREW BRADLEY...and thanks to Angela Briscoe and
Tom King for continuing to introduce new athletes to the sport.
The Senior Men and Women's teams could do with some new blood.
The Men in particular are facing relegation to Division 2 unless their
fortunes change over the season....but big thanks to the loyal Vet
runners who found themselves in the scoring seven for a change.

FRENCH NATIONAL TRIATHLON CHAMPS, 21st MAY 06
Bob Harrison, the master of understatement, let slip in a
postscript to an email to Gareth that JESS HARRISON had
won the French National Triathlon Championships last
weekend. Now I've been sniffing around on the net to bring
you a pic of Jess (below, on the left), and to report that she is
now part of the French Team Poissy Tri and obviously in
great form. Translation of their site here
Congratulations Jess from all your supporters in WHHAC!
OXFORD XC LEAGUE, BANBURY, 5th MARCH 2006
Let's start with the positives. Another great run by TIM TRAINOR,
winning the U17 Race by miles (well, 33 seconds to be precise).
FRANCES BRISCOE followed a re-surgent Nikki Slater home, but
was rewarded with the overall Senior Womens' title. Great
support too from JOSEPHINE RHODES in 5th place meant that the
Ladies came 2nd overall in the team standings, helped during the
season by consistent runs from GEE ARMITAGE, SHEILA BAILEY
and ROS KNOPP.
With the Senior Men it was a case of great support from the foot
soldiers, but where have the cavalry gone? 7th out 8 teams hopefully
means Div One still next season, unless two go down....?
Still, two of the Vets ran very well all season; STUART SHILSTON
nabbed 2nd overall, closely followed by NICK PONTING in 3rd.

OXFORD XC LEAGUE, CIRENCESTER, 5th FEB 2006
Performance of the day goes to TIM TRAYNOR, back to winning
ways in the U17 Race, closely followed by FRANCES BRISCOE,
who finished 2nd in the Senior Women. Frances has had a few
injury problems this winter, but is now back to good form.

LOCAL OFFICIAL HONOURED IN NEW YEAR'S HONOURS LIST
Congratulations to Eileen Kear of Radley AC who was awarded the MBE in the
New Year Honours list for services to sport. It is good news that there is
recognition of the work Eileen has done and we are grateful for all the
effort that she, and other officials, have put in over the years. Eileen was
officiating at our Oxford League Cross Country race at Lambourn on the 1st
January - and featured on the back page of this week's Wantage and Grove
Herald.
OXFORD MAIL LEAGUE ROUND 3: LAMBOURN 1/1/06
The New Year started with White Horse Harriers hosting a successful Oxford Mail Cross Country League race at Lambourn on the morning of the 1st January. Thanks to all those who helped, particularly PAUL JEGOU for spearheading the organization and JASON COOKE for dealing with local matters at Lambourn. Thanks also to the band who marked the course on Saturday as well as to all the members of WHH who helped out on the day. We also thank the League organizers and officials as well as the landowners and others in Lambourn who made it possible.
Not only was the race successful from an organizational point of view but White Horse Harriers achieved some notable performances in the races as well. In the younger age groups top-ten results were achieved by ELLIE DYKES 9th in the U/11 girls; ALEX JONES 6th in the U/13 boys; and HENRY PENFOLD 9th in the U15/17 boys. The women's team were overall winners on the day with GEE ARMITAGE 4th, JOSEPHINE RHODES 5th and FRANCES BRISCOE 9th. On top of that the Women's B team was second in division two. The senior men's race saw our trio of University students dominate the front of the race with TOM PENFOLD 1st, OWAIN BRISTOW 2nd and CHRIS GILLESPIE 4th, with the men's team finishing second. Furthermore with 14 runners out we fielded two complete men's teams.
Results of all the races can be found here
The next cross country races are the Oxfordshire County Championships, which take place on Sunday 15th January at Carsell, near Buckland, just north of Standford-in-the-Vale.
ROAD RUNNING NEWS
Road Running Secretary, DENE STRINGFELLOW, has sent me a link to his November 05 newsletter.
We are hoping to get together for a revamp of the White Horse Website to
make it more up-to-date and visually exciting (not before time!).
Any suggestions and ideas gratefully accepted, email me
CHELTENHAM MIDSUMMER OPEN 13/7/05
TIM TRAYNOR and JOSEPHINE RHODES ran the mile and both established new club records. Tim ran a good time of 4'32.4" to replace OWAIN BRISTOW's U17 record. Josephine also did well and took two seconds off her previous best time to improve her U20 and SENIOR mile record to 5'06.1"
RIDGEWAY RELAY, 19/6/05
Well done to all the Harriers who competed on what must have been one of the hottest days of the year so far. In spite of the torturous conditions the team managed to finish a creditable 14th out of 39.
A link to the full set of results can be found here
OXON LEAGUE 5, HORSPATH, 6th MARCH 2005
Great to see TOM PENFOLD down from Uni again to
support the club with a fine victory in the Senior
Men's race...but not such a solo run this time around,
with a very impressive bit of packing by Headington.
Second to sixth, closing the team in by twenty, 59
points, to take the overall team title from Woodstock;
that's class in anyone's book. And their B Team were
pretty good too...3rd place on the day!
We managed to finish 6th, and 8th overall, to miss
relegation...but just over 200 points separated us
from 3rd place...which illustrates the gap Headington
and Woodstock have over everyone else at the moment.
PAUL JEGOU got his just rewards for a consistent, gutsy
season...3rd place overall in the Senior Men's rankings.
Other Harriers with good overall positions were:
JOE LIQUORISH 7th in U11 Boys
OLIVIA LORD 9th in U11 Girls
ALEX JONES 5th in U13 Boys
GEE ARMITAGE 4th in V35 Women
MEL ROBERTS 6th in V45 Women
STUART SHILSTON 5th in V40 Men
and of course the "unseen heroes" who turned out in
virtually every race...Jeremy, Gareth, Alice, Henry,
Joseph M to name just a few...
OXON LEAGUE 4, CIRENCESTER PARK, 6th FEB 2005
Again, apologies for my lateness reporting this race.
Another dismal team performance for the men, but
a fantastic run for PAUL JEGOU....2nd place and only
seven seconds down on the winner. Surely it can't
be long before "our Paul" scoops a much-deserved
victory in an Oxon League race? Elsewhere, TIM
TRAYNOR and GEE ARMYTAGE had solid runs, but
this edition of the series yet again proved to be
a bit of a White Horse nemesis...
OXON X-C CHAMPS, LAMBOURN, 16th JANUARY 2005
I've been laid low with a mystery virus, so couldn't
make it on the day, and have only just sourced the
My impression from afar is that Tom King has another
great squad of athletes coming through in the U15
Boys' category. TIM TRAYNOR has been having a very
good season, and here he won convincingly by 26 seconds,
which is a street in anyone's language (or maybe a
muddy lane up on the Lambourn Downs). Tim was
well supported by HENRY PENFOLD, SIMON ROWLAND
and JOSEPH McCROHON in taking the Team Gold.
Other good individual performances were STEVE
McGUIGAN 4th and PAUL JEGOU 6th in the Senior
Men's race, both of them beating Chris Sykes, the
Woodstock Master who has been winning Oxon
League Races. In the Ladies races, GEE ARMYTAGE
was 3rd V35, and was backed up by ROS KNOPP,
SHEILA BAILEY and GILL CROSS for Silver Medals
in the "Masters" (Mistresses?!!) Team event.
As ever, a big thankyou to all the Harriers and family
supporters who helped with marshalling and other
duties on the day
OXFORD LEAGUE 3, BANBURY, 2nd JANUARY 2005
Yet more encouraging results, on a cold but bright,
sunny day at Drayton School in Banbury. For class
with a capital "C" look no further than the Senior Men's
Race, where TOM PENFOLD completely destroyed the
opposition, winning by over two minutes...with strength
like this, his track form promises to be sensational.
JASON continues to run well, with a run that puts him
3rd overall in the series rankings, and it was great to see
OWAIN BRISTOW and STEVE McGUIGAN both inside the
top 10; in fact the team finished 3rd on the day, and moved
up to 3rd overall.
FRANCES BRISCOE was another back from university and
in great form, victorious over the very strong Wendy
Jones. With JOSEPHINE RHODES also home (8th) and
ROS KNOPP 20th, the Ladies finished 2nd, and are 4th
overall in the series rankings.
TIM TRAYNOR lost out by one second to his older rival
from Radley, but leads the U15 series rankings.
REEBOK CROSS CHALLENGE ROUND 4: SEFTON PARK, LIVERPOOL 4/12/04
The Reebok Series cross country races are analogous to the
BMC meetings of the summer, high quality nationwide events
that bring together the best distance runners in the country.
TOM PENFOLD ran (for Birchfield Harriers) in the Senior race
and produced one of his best performances on the country to
finish 11th overall. In the process he beat several notable runners
including the 2004 Southern Champion Huw Lobb.
TIM TRAYNOR took part in the U15 race and ran well to finish in
19th place, only thirty seconds down on the winner.
In some very late track & field news, ROS KNOPP established
a new Senior and V35 club record of 18'14.0" in the County 5000m
Championships at Abingdon last May.
OXFORD LEAGUE 2, ENSLOW QUARRY, 5th DEC 04
The Senior Men pulled their socks up this time around,
with a much-improved 4th position. It was great to see
JASON COOKE back from an injury lay-off, and looking
to be in his best form ever, with a fine 5th place less than
a minute down on winner Chris Sykes. PAUL JEGOU was
not far behind in 10th, and both PAUL CARR and STUART
SHILSTON improved considerably on their first-race
performances. NICK PONTING was another back from
injury, and he moved through strongly from a steady start
to just pip DAN NEW, 57th and 58th. DAVE MURFIN closed
in the scoring team in 82nd, just holding off a returning-to-
form SIMON W who's achieved his first season aim of
finishing in the top 100.
Another good individual performance was put in by
GEE ARMITAGE, who ran a strong race mainly on her
own to finish 6th.
WESSEX LEAGUE 2, SALISBURY, 14th NOV 04
Paul's battle cry to get a Senior Men's team out in a Wessex
League fixture paid dividends, with a motley bunch of four
turning up at Hudson's Field on a bright sunny (but cold) Sunday.
As ever, PJ was mixing it up at the front, trying to hang on to
Supervet Brian Gardner of Swindon (who romped to his 2nd
win in the series). Paul faded a bit on the last lap, but still
managed a sterling 9th place.
Meanwhile a ding dong contest was unfolding between Dan
New and Dave Murfin, with the latter "giving up" on the last
lap (his words, not mine!)...Dan 60th, Dave 67th.
Bringing up the rear was yours truly (Simon W), who can't
even blame the sheep this time round, or the light aircraft
flying very low overhead...just slow legs and 103rd.
OXON LEAGUE 1, ASCOTT-UNDER-WYCHWOOD, 7th NOV 04
The cross country season stated in earnest on Sunday, with the
first Oxon League fixture at Ascott...yes, the usual mudfest and
water-splash for the Senior Men, and this year an extra hazard....
rampaging sheep! A herd of woolly athletes hijacked the race
and showed the humans a thing or two, especially with their
steeplechasing technique over walls. And their club?
White Sheep Harriers, of course!
Best White Horse Harrier on the day was probably Frances
Briscoe, 3rd in the Senior Women, and backed up strongly by
Gee Armitage (10th) and Ros Knopp (21st) the Ladies finished in
a well-up 4th place.
Tim Traynor was 4th in the combined U15/17 race, and was 2nd
U15 Boy.
Oh dear, the Senior Men finished 9th out of 10 in Div. One, but
were missing stalwarts Jason and Nick, and all the University
lads....with this lot back for a few races we should avoid relegation.
And perhaps beat a few sheep, too....

LONG DISTANCE RACES & RECORDS
The interlude between the track and cross country seasons is by no means a void. For many it provides a chance to recover and then put some serious mileage into the bank, while for others the absence of grit/mud is a welcome change in the routine with lots of opportunities to take part in 'fun' road and multi-terrain races.
SHEILA BAILEY took part in the New Forest Marathon on the 19/9 and recorded a time of 3'44"46, a new W50 club record to go with her W35 and W45 marks. OWAIN BRISTOW did the Mortimer 10k on the 26/9 and in winning the race bettered his U20 club record by 12 seconds, finishing in a time of 34'09. PAUL JEGOU successfully defended his Longworth 10k title on the 19/9. He completed the testing off-road course in a time of 37'02.
U15/U17/U20 INTERCOUNTY MATCH: TILSLEY PARK 12/9/04
Seven Harriers were selected to represent Oxfordshire at this meeting. The other counties competing were: Avon & Somerset, Devon (long coach journey people), Gloucestershire and Worcestershire. As usual, the trademark back straight wind of Tilsley Park was present and this was much to the enjoyment of the competitors. While this put paid to any chances of setting fast times it did make for some interesting and tactical middle-distance races.
CHRIS GILLESPIE (U20) ran in the 800m and was first B-string runner and second overall as Oxfordshire recorded a comfortable one-two. ROBERT BOWLES (U15), fresh from a cycling time-trial on Saturday, also competed over this distance to pick up some valuable points for the county. JOSEPHINE RHODES (U20) finished a close second in the A-string over 1500m and this performance was repeated in the U15 event with TIM TRAYNOR just being ousted in the last 100m. HENRY PENFOLD ran in the same race and finished in a time that was only one second above his personal best, despite the incredibly blustery conditions. OWAIN BRISTOW ran next in the U20 race and was 3rd overall and 1st B-string runner. The winner of the race was the same runner who had beaten Chris in the 800m and thus Oxfordshire achieved another middle-distance double.
TOM DEXTER (U15) took part in the Javelin and improved on his previous best to set a new Club Record of 37.91m. If he continues to train well, Tom has a good chance of achieving the English Schools qualifying distance next season.
WATFORD OPEN GRADED MEETING 1/9/04
Three Harriers were among the 20-ish runners taking part in the 3km 'A' race. Given the large spread of ages, the differences in standards between the competitors were not surprising. TOM PENFOLD set off with the leaders but chose not to go with them on their potentially suicidal mid-race 64 second lap (4min 1500m pace!). He was rewarded with a new PB of 8' 30.3" and was able to catch some of the tiring front runners towards the end of the race, a la Holmes. PAUL JEGOU ran too and very nearly broke 9 minutes for the second occasion this season with a solid time of 9' 01.6". Half a minute behind Paul came TIM TRAYNOR, who, with a finishing time of 9' 31.6" demolished Andrew Stickley's 1990 U15 Club Record by 33 seconds and now has the writer looking over his shoulder on the track much more often.
CLUB RECORD
Back for the summer from university, TOM PENFOLD set a new Senior Record over 1000m, recording 2' 31.8" at a Cheltenham Open Meeting on July 28th. This beat Pete Wilson's 14 year old record, set at a very similar Cheltenham meeting, by almost 3 seconds.
SOUTH OF ENGLAND COMBINED EVENTS & JUNIOR 3000M CHAMPIONSHIPS
JULY 24th/25th
Two weeks after competing in the English Schools Championships at Gateshead, CHRIS GILLESPIE and JOSEPHINE RHODES took part in their respective Under 20 3km races. For Chris it was his first run over the distance for three years and unsurprisingly he lowered his PB by over 30 seconds to record 9' 01.97". With this performance he finished sixth, matching his excellent placing over 1500m at Gateshead.
Josephine also recorded a PB with a new Under 20 Club Record of 10' 09.57". Only another six seconds need to be knocked off in order to beat Angela Briscoe's longstanding Senior Record. This great performance also gained her a silver medal to go with the one she earned over the same distance as an Under 17 two years ago and she also finished ahead of several good runners including the English Schools Cross Country silver medallist.
RIDGEWAY RELAY 2004: JUNE 20th
White Horse Harriers finished a creditable 18th out of 41 teams in this 10 stage event, covering all 85 miles of the neolithic pathway. Everybody who took part ran well and sufficiently fast enough to ensure that mass start participation was avoided. The results can be found here
CLUB RECORD
New recruit TOM DEXTER launched the javelin out to 36.49m several weeks ago to establish a new U15 specification mark. Not content with this he improved to 36.51m several days ago and with another year in the age group Tom looks set to go even further.
BMC GRAND PRIX, WATFORD, 12/6/2004
The aim of meetings such as this is to bring together Britain's best 800m and 1500m runners of all ages and provide competitive races that lead to fast times and PBs. The Harriers that took part satisfied this criteria.
TOM PENFOLD (U23), now at Birmingham University, ran in the 1500 'D' race and produced his best time for two seasons with a 3' 51.74 clocking, less than a second off his PB.
CHRIS GILLESPIE (U20) ran his best 800 to date in the 'F' race, completing the two laps in 1' 55.36. This is only 0.26s slower than Tom's club record and is very close to the English Schools qualifying time of 1' 55.00. However, Chris already has the 1500 time, having run a great PB of 3' 57 last Wednesday at another Watford meeting.
JOSEPHINE RHODES (U20) arguably ran the best race of the evening in the 800 'E' race to record a PB and outright club record of 2' 12.05. This is well below the English Schools time, but, with the 1500 time already in the bag, Josephine can take part in either event at Gateshead.
OXON AA TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS, MAY 15th & 16th, 2004 & ROUND-UP
Well done to all the Harriers who took part. Newly-crowned County Champions are: Frances Briscoe (Senior Women) 800, 1500
Robert Bowles (U15 Boys) 800
Tim Traynor (U15 Boys) 1500
Chris Gillespie (U20 Men) 800, 1500
Nick Ponting (Veteran Men) Pole Vault
Dick Jegou (Veteran Men) Discus.
Silver Medallists: Frances Briscoe 400, Josephine Rhodes (U20 Women) 800, Robert Bowles 400, Tim Traynor 800, Paul Jegou (Senior Men) 3000, Nick Ponting 800, 1500, Long Jump, Bruce Charles (Veteran Men) Pole Vault.
Bronze Medallists: Ros Knopp (Veteran Women) 100, Josephine Rhodes 400, Tom Dexter (U15 Boys) 400, Triple Jump, Paul Jegou 1500.
Robert ran 2'09.4" in the 800m to break Nick Lillywhite's eight-year-old club record.
To see the full results click here
At the British Milers Club Solihull Grand Prix on May 22nd ex-Harrier Nick Altmann ran a cracking 14:08.42 to win the 5000m 'B' race.
Josephine Rhodes also ran on the 22nd (In the Southern Women's League) and set an outright club record over 400m, with a time of 61.0"
EARLY SEASON TRACK PERFORMANCES
Some Harriers have already been making their mark on the tartan this year:
JOSEPHINE RHODES (U20) achieved an English Schools qualifying time running a 4'42 1500m at Watford and ran in the junior mile event at the 4 Minute Mile commemoration meeting last week at the famous Oxford University track.
CHRIS GILLESPIE (U20) ran in the latter event too (not sub 4 yet, but there's time) and also ran a solid 4'06 for 1500m at a rather windy Watford open.
TIM TRAYNOR (U15) ran a 4'30 1500m at Banbury and then an excellent 4'24 at the BMC meeting. This is a new club record at Under 15 level, beating the previous time (4'28 C Gillespie 2000) by four seconds . It is also only two seconds slower than the time needed to qualify for the English Schools National Championships.
Also setting new club records (for Radley AC) was PAUL JEGOU (SEN), who ran two good races in the opening Southern League match at Abingdon. He ran a 16'25 5km and a 4'13 1500m and looks set to improve on his personal bests in the next few months.
Young Harriers HENRY PENFOLD (of Penfold fame) and JOSEPH McCROHON have benefited from the early meetings too and have already run new pbs.
LONDON MARATHON, Sunday 18th April 2004
A miserable day, but probably quite good for marathon running
(apart from the squelch factor). Thanks to Pete Wilson for
sourcing the Harriers' times and positions.

THE LAST CROSS COUNTRY (except for Brussels)
English Schools National XC Champs, Mote Park, Maidstone, 13th March
Four Harriers competed in the most prestigious event of the winter for students. In order to qualify to take part it is necessary to be one of the six best runners in the county so just competing and completing the race is a great achievement. The results were:
ALICE LORD 277th (Junior Girls)
TIM TRAYNOR 86th (Junior Boys)
JOSEPHINE RHODES 60th (Senior Girls)
OWAIN BRISTOW 31st (Senior Boys)
As Josephine and I are leaving college this summer to embark on higher education courses this was our last ever schools cross country race. However, barring another outbreak of foot and mouth, Alice and Tim can look forward to contesting the event and improving their finishing positions for another four or five years. Paula Radcliffe finished somewhere around the 300 mark as a Junior Girl and I finished 244th as a Junior Boy so anything is possible!
A link to the results can be found here.

FINAL OXON LEAGUE, 7th MARCH, BANBURY
This was all about individual Harrier results...the team results were
pretty uninspiring. Pride of place goes to our one overall winner,
OWAIN BRISTOW, in the U20 Men...Owain had a steady run to
finish ninth in the Senior race today, and clinch his title.
Best run on the day was probably FRANCES BRISCOE in the
Senior Women...2nd place and not that far down on overall winner
Wendy Jones. In fact the women's team had a reasonable 5th
place finish, with backup from ANGELA BRISCOE and VICTORIA
LORD.
In the overall stakes, ALICE LORD finished 4th U13 Girl, and ALEX
JONES was 6th U11 Boy.
The Senior Men's performance was desperate, with only four of
us there...much as Jeremy and the two Simons like being in the
scoring team, it was pretty sad that we effectively lost 400 points
on the day, and instead of fighting for 3rd overall we ended up
7th....at this rate it'll be Division 2 next season....
SOUTHEAST SCHOOLS INTERCOUNTY MATCH
Wellington College, Berkshire, 14th February
Several Harriers took part in this regional cross-country match, having qualified for it through the County Schools XC Champs. I didn't do it this year but I have been informed that TIM TRAYNOR ran a great race to come third in the Junior Boys age group.Strong teams from Essex and Hampshire took part in this meeting (the big players in XC) so it really was a fantastic achievement.
JOSEPHINE RHODES also ran well (over the same course as Tim) to finish ninth in the Senior Girls race.
The next schools race is the big one, the All England National Championships at Maidstone. By the way, the Vale and County Schools XC Champs were on different days, which I found quite sporting really.
Results of the Intercounty Match should be available from around here
CROSS COUNTRY: THE CONTINUING SAGA
Oxford Mail League Round Four: Cirencester
Reasons for good cheer: Tim Traynor's inaugral victory in the U15/U17 category, the appearance of some different faces amoung the ranks of the senior men, the ongoing participation of a number of Harriers in the younger races and the weather(!).
Don't miss the last fixture at Drayton School, Banbury, on the first Sunday of March.
SCHOOLS SUCCESS
As ever at this time of year, the Schools Area XC Champs
are held, the Oxon and Vale of White Horse races staged
in close proximity, and at the same venue (Radley College).
In fact, I've grabbed the results from the Oxford Mail; did
the races happen on the same day, Owain?
Star of both was TIM TRAYNOR, who won two area titles in
the U15 Boys. And bagged himself a full page colour photo
in Saturday's Oxford Mail. CHRIS GILLESPIE won the Oxon
U19 Boys, with OWAIN BRISTOW second.....but OWAIN
secured gold in the Vale of WH race. JOSEPHINE RHODES
matched this, with second behind Hannah England in the
Oxon race, and victory in the WH race.
All of them were representing King Alfred's Community and
Sports College...makes you proud to come from Wantage....
CROSS COUNTRY RETURNS
4/01/04 Oxon County Championships: Horspath
Well done to every one who turned out to run in mild and semi-dry conditions. As always, the hill proved to be something of a mental barrier (does it ever stop going?), but sprinting relief was provided by the long downhill stretch.
Highlights included: Four runners in the top ten in the Senior Men lead home by Tom Penfold in fourth and including Chris Gillespie and Owain Bristow, second & third placed juniors respectively;
Paul Jegou finished 7th Senior Man and must have booked his County place. The Men's team grabbed Silver, and the Vets team took the Bronze, led home by Nick Ponting in 4th.
There was a second place for Frances Briscoe in the Senior Women with Josephine Rhodes taking the top U20 spot. Ros Knopp was 4th in Vet35 Women. Tim Traynor snatched second in the U15 race to gain another county vest, whilst Henry Penfold also achieved selection for the UK Intercounty Match despite a very recent cold. In the U13 category Alice Lord ran well to take fifth.

CROSS COUNTRY THE THIRD
Oxford Mail League Round Three: Radley
Another good turnout of Harriers on a cold but relatively dry day. The last time we provided a winner in the senior category was at Banbury in 2002 courtesy of Tom Penfold and today he ran away to another victory. Also good runs from Chris Gillespie, 4th in the Senior Men, and Nick Ponting, 37th, and getting better with every race he does.

CROSS COUNTRY TWO
Oxford Mail League Round Two: Enslow Quarry
A well-organised and enjoyable morning!
CROSS COUNTRY KICKS OFF
Oxford Mail League Round One: Ascott-Under-Wychwood
CROSS COUNTRY
Yet again that time of the year is almost upon us. For some this means a break from the monotony of running round a track half a dozen times and for others the onset of mud and big hills leads to a spate of warm weather training / recuperation.
In just over a months time on the 2nd of November the first Oxford Mail League race kicks off at Ascott-under-Wychwood, a course renowned for its kids-sized swimming pool and long grassy hill. More details can be found on the League's website
If you are a real castor acer then give the Wessex league at Hurn Bridge, Poole a go on the 19th October. Paul Jegou will be happy to tell you more if you contact him.
SUCCESS!
Many congratulations to PAUL JEGOU for breaking his 1500m PB at Watford on Wednesday evening. 4' 06" is a fine reward for a very solid season of committed racing.
HIGHCLERE 10KM 31/08/03............
Four harriers took part in this annual multiterrain jaunt around the grounds of Highclere Castle, owned by none other than Lord Carnarvon.
Pride of place went to PAUL JEGOU who went with the early pace and finished in third place overall in a field of 451 runners. OWAIN BRISTOW didn't go off with the leaders (it was my first 10k) and managed to come home in seventh place beating Paul's U20 club record in the process. Next back was NICK PONTING in fiftieth place, his run confirming that come the cross country season he will be a valuable member of the team. True to her comments in the 2002 summer Harrier ROSS KNOPP did the race again and ran very well to take one hundred and thirty-ninth place overall and third Vet 35.

MONDAY NIGHT XC HANDICAP...Pete Wilson reports..
The first summer handicap run was held yesterday (21st July) on a virtually traffic free course. Apart from the light rain, conditions were good. Dave closed the gap on Paul quite early on, but was unable to break away completely. Tom was still in the lead at Betterton (half a mile from the finish) but was caught towards the end. Nevertheless, Tom's surprising turn of speed over the last few hundred yards kept Dave under pressure right to the finish line. Thanks to Jackie Wright for performing time-keeping duties.
Handicap Finish time Actual time
Dave Wright 9:30 35:32 26:02
Tom King 0:00 35:35 35:35

ALAN JONES
Most present Club members will have heard the very sad news that ALAN JONES passed away last week. Alan, and of course MARION, RUTH and CLIFFORD have been stalwarts of White Horse Harriers for many years....our thoughts and prayers are with them.
The funeral takes place at Wantage Methodist Church on Thursday 29th May, starting at 2.30 pm. The family have asked for donations to Cancer Research UK if desired, rather than flowers.
