THE HARRIER
BITE-SIZED
December
2006
As an
introduction to this edition I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas. We
still have plenty of activities going on and would encourage even more of you
to come along to our training sessions (and races.)
Gareth Smith. Chairman WHH.
Report from the AGM.
This
years’ AGM on 20th October was rather poorly attended. However, the
required business of the club was carried out. As Chairman, I would like to
thank all those who worked on the committee last year and look forward to
another active year to come. The new committee is as follows:
Gareth
Smith – Chairman Dene
Stringfellow – Road Running Secretary
Dick
Jegou – Secretary Angela
Briscoe – General Member
Charles
Bristow – Treasurer Tom
King - General Member
Mark
Godden – Membership Secretary
Paul
Jegou – Cross-Country Secretary
Cross-Country Races for Young
Athletes.
We
will be staging some low-key Cross Country races for young athletes on the
dates given below. These will take place on the King Alfred’s School field
behind Wantage Sports Centre. The dates for these are:
Saturday
16th December. 2pm start
Saturday
31st February. 2pm start
The
second date is provisional – and may be revised depending on how the first
event goes.
These
races are on a Saturday as we know a number of young athletes are either not
able to travel to fixtures or have other commitments on a Sunday. The races are
aimed at club members although all are welcome. Adult help is needed at these
events and please let Angela or Tom know if you can assist.
2006/7 Subscriptions now due.
A
separate letter included in the posting with this copy of The Harrier details
the subscriptions renewals which are now due. These should be sent to the new
membership secretary, Mark Godden whose contact details are on the form. A
small number of you have already paid and that information will be passed on to
Mark and in these cases we have not included the renewal form in with this mailing.
New years Day Handicap – New Venue.
This
year’s New Years Day run will start from The Nelson pub in Wantage. The course,
details of which have yet to be decided, will go out towards Ardington. There is an Oxfordshire League race the day
before, but we still hope this will be well attended. 11am start, with the
option of staying for a drink afterwards (or maybe just come along for a
drink.)
Thursday Training Sessions –
Additional Adult Help Required.
A large
number of young athletes have been attending the Thursday evening training
sessions, which is very encouraging. Moreover, the numbers attending has stayed
high despite the dark evenings. We are in need of more adult help on these
evenings. If you are able to help please let either Angela or Tom know. This
help does not have to be every week as with a handful of helpers we can build a
rota.
2007 White Horse Half
The
2007 White Horse Half Marathon will take place on Sunday 1st April. Please note the date in your diaries
now. If you can help please let either

25th Anniversary Dinner. Lains Barn. 6th October
A
total of 41 people attended the 25th Anniversary Dinner including a
number of past members. It was a chance to see old friends and Lain Barn always
adds to a good atmosphere. The whole evening was very enjoyable and a large
selection of old photos and newspaper cuttings were brought along to aid the
reminiscing. We were treated to an enjoyable after dinner talk by Frank Briscoe
who dipped into some of his experiences of competing at the highest level and
gave us food for thought for the future. Now we look forward to continuing the
successes of White Horse Harriers into the next 25 years.
E-mail
At
the bottom of the White Horse Harriers web page is a link for joining an e-mail
list that we would like to use for some quick communications. We have some
e-mail information from the membership forms, but will only use that for the
more significant information. We would like to have a list of those who are
happy to receive less formal communications by this route.
